Top Ten Things to do in Tonbridge

Our Atkins Court development is situated in the heart of Tonbridge, Kent, which has been ranked 16th in the top 50 places to live in the UK based on quality of life. Halifax conducted the survey. They considered ‘factors such as residents’ health and life expectancy, wellbeing, earnings, employment, crime rates and weather’.

We know that Tonbridge is a great place to live, but what are the best things to do in and around the Kent town? Well, we’ve chosen our top ten and shared them here with you.

Top 10 things to do in Tonbridge

1. Storm the castle

Firstly, overlooking the high street and dating back to the Norman conquest, Tonbridge Castle has been faithfully restored and is well maintained. Visitors can take an audio tour and imagine how a medieval lord and lady would have lived through interactive displays and life-like models.

2. Climb like Spiderman

Clip N Climb is an ‘indoor climbing arena’ where you can safely try indoor climbing. Each 90 minute session includes a thorough 30 minute safety briefing. Every harness connects to a ‘belay’ which means that if you fall (or jump!), you are gently lowered to the ground. Climbing sessions are suitable for ages 4 plus and there are discounted autism and SEN sessions available. We strongly advise advance booking.

3. Time for tea

Pop into The Bakehouse at 124 for a traditional afternoon tea in this beautiful Tudor building, where you can watch as the artisan breads are prepared and baked to perfection.

4. Have an outdoor adventure

Just West of Tonbridge, Haysden Country Park is a nature reserve and public park. It has a natural play area including ‘an aerial runway, climbing items, slides, chimes, bridge, roundabout, tyre and other toddler swings’ to enjoy, along with both natural and historical walking trails around the 160 acres.

5. Love the lido

Tonbridge outdoor pool is heated and features a water arch, beach area and a swim through channel connecting it to the indoor pools. Consequently, this is the perfect place to cool off in the summer months.

6. Roarsome golf

At Mr Mulligan’s Dino Golf you can play 18 holes of family adventure golf through a Jurassic course featuring dinosaurs, water features and a helicopter that has crash-landed!

7. Get arty

Artspring Gallery on Tonbridge High Street ‘brings together a collection of high quality work from local and regional contemporary artists’. The diverse range of media, including ceramics, jewellery, fine art, sculpture and glass is sure to inspire you.

8. Scenic cycling

The Tudor cycle trail runs from Tonbridge Castle to Penshurst Place (just 6 miles away and well worth a visit in itself). The trail is almost entirely off-road and therefore perfect for anyone wishing to enjoy the beautiful Kent countryside. So get on your bike, follow the route and reward yourself at the end with a cake and a cuppa at The Porcupine Pantry.

9. If you go down to the woods today…

…you’re sure of a great surprise just South East of Tonbridge at Tudeley Woods Nature Reserve. The idyllic spot is a botanist, butterfly and birdwatcher’s paradise. Managed by the RSPB, this is a peaceful and ancient woodland to enjoy.

10. A trip on the Med(way)

Finally, a wonderfully relaxing way to spend a sunny afternoon! The Tonbridge River Trip offers a different way to see the town, learn a little about its history and see some local wildlife. Since the boat is electric (silent), you may even be lucky enough to spot a kingfisher. This activity is both seasonal and weather dependent, so please check before you go.
