2. Let in more natural light to improve your home
One of the most simple ways to improve your home (and therefore make it more pleasant to live in) is to increase natural light. You can do this without adding extra windows or skylights.
Try any or all of the following:
- Clean your mirrors. Position a large mirror at a right-angle to the window. This will allow natural light to be reflected around the room without becoming dazzling.
- Clean your windows, inside and out to allow the maximum amount of daylight to flood inside.
- Open curtains and blinds fully.
- Trim any overgrown or overhanging shrubs and trees that overshadow your windows.
- Paint your ceiling a lighter shade than the rest of the room. This is a simple trick to make it appear higher (making the walls seem taller). You probably already have a tin of white paint in your home or garage, right?

This is particularly important if you have a family, are working from home, or both! Create clear zones within your home. You may not have space for a home office, but can you carve out a corner for a desk and laptop set-up? Can you allocate an area for your family to exercise and play in? Think about how you all use your home and agree on ‘zones’ to make the best use of space. For example, where do you eat? Where do you study? Where do you relax?
